GEORGETOWN, KY - MAY 23, 2017 – The Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet released earlier this month the Travel and Tourism Industry’s Economic Impact for 2016. The results concluded that Scott County generated approximately $178 million in total tourist spending for the area, which is an increase of 16.1% over 2015.

Local attractions continue to see an increase in visitors as the Scott County area flourishes. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, the largest Toyota plant in the world, saw more than 28,000 visitors in 2016 for their motorized tram tours. Nearly 30,000 people from all over the world visited Old Friends Retired Thoroughbred Farm during 2016. The Kentucky Horse Park, where Scott County inhabits 200 acres, experienced around 860,000 visitors for all areas of the park. In addition to local attractions, the presence of the Ark Encounter in Williamstown, Kentucky continues to bring many visitors to the Georgetown area.

“It’s an exciting time to be in Georgetown/Scott County,” said Lori Saunders, Executive Director of Georgetown/Scott County Tourism. “The recent economic impact helps determine that our area is a destination for travelers. It’s because of our amazing attractions, in and around our area, that make us the fastest growing in Kentucky. We hope everyone is as anxious as we are to see what 2017 has in store for Georgetown.”

According to the “Economic Impact of Kentucky’s Travel and Tourism Industry – 2015 and 2016” report, Georgetown/Scott County increased total travel spending by 24 million from 2015, which is up four times the amount of spending from the 2014 total. As a result of taxes generated by tourist spending in the area, Scott County households paid $1,009 less in local and state taxes in 2016.

In addition to the 2016 tourist activity in Scott County, Kentucky’s tourism industry as a whole produced roughly $14.5 billion in total expenditures, created more than $1.5 billion in tax revenue, and supported nearly 193,000 jobs in Kentucky. The registered gains from tourism for 2016 revealed that the state experienced the strongest overall economic impact growth rate since 2005.

“A vibrant tourism industry means a vibrant Kentucky,” Kentucky Tourism Commissioner Kristen Branscum said. “The economic impact numbers for 2016 reinforce the fact that the tourism industry is a vital economic driver for Kentucky.”

The Georgetown/Scott County Tourism Commission’s vision is to be a leader in the industry and be seen as the primary organization promoting activities and attractions within the county. They seek to ensure the best visitor experience, thereby maximizing the economic impact for Georgetown and Scott County.
