Instructions provided by Buffalo Gals Homemakers
In Scott County, barn quilts aren’t just beautiful pieces of art dotting our rolling farmland—they’re stories. Stories of heritage, craftsmanship, community, and the quiet pride Kentuckians take in creating something that lasts.
If you’ve ever driven our country roads and admired those bright, geometric panels hanging proudly on barns, sheds, and porches, here’s some exciting news: you can make one yourself. Thanks to the Buffalo Gals Homemakers—an old group of local experts who’ve crafted countless quilts throughout the community—you can follow their tried-and-true method to create your own piece of outdoor folk art.
Whether you’re visiting Georgetown and inspired by our Quilt Trail, or you’re a Scott County local ready for a new weekend project, this guide will walk you through every step.
What You’ll Need
Creating a barn quilt doesn’t require expensive tools or professional experience—just patience, creativity, and the right materials. Here’s what the Buffalo Gals recommend:
Creating a barn quilt is part artistry, part craftsmanship. Here’s how the Buffalo Gals do it—and how you can too.
The very best quilts begin long before the paint comes out.
Start by sketching your chosen pattern on an 8½" x 11" sheet of paper. Paint the sketch using the exact colors you plan to use on the board. This small step saves big headaches later—some colors simply don’t behave as expected outdoors.
Once you're satisfied, it’s time to bring your design to life.
Using a straight-edge, carefully pencil your design onto the MDO board. Accuracy here makes painting much easier. Think of it as drawing your own giant coloring book.
Frog Tape is your best friend. Press it down firmly along every line—paint can and will sneak under loose tape.
A few tips from the pros:
Be patient. Precision now means less touch-up later.
4. Continue Color by Color
Once a section dries, remove the tape carefully, retape for the next color, and repeat.
You may not be able to tape every section of a color at once—some pieces will touch and require separate painting rounds.
Before moving on, check for:
Small touch-ups are fine. Larger areas (1–2 inches) should be repainted to avoid texture differences.
5. Build the Frame
A frame isn’t required—but it adds a polished, traditional look and helps with mounting.
Lay your boards along the finished quilt and mark the inner corners. Cut each corner at a 45-degree angle, making sure all pieces meet cleanly.
Attach the frame with exterior screws or T-brackets (especially useful on uneven metal barn siding).
6. Mounting Your Quilt
If you’re hanging an 8-foot quilt made of four panels, this part is the most delicate. Everything must line up perfectly so the pattern looks seamless.
A few golden rules:
Once everything is in place, paint over your screw heads to help them disappear into the design.
Then step back—and admire your new outdoor masterpiece.
Making a barn quilt is more than an art project—it’s a connection to Kentucky’s rural roots, to the quilt patterns passed down through generations, and to the spirit of creativity that shapes Scott County.
When you hang your quilt, you’re adding your story to the landscape. And if you take a drive through our countryside, you’ll see plenty of others doing the same.
If you don't have time or room for a full-sized barn quilt, try scaling down the process for a fun family craft! Get out the hobby paints & make a barn-quilt fit for a picture frame, or maybe even the fridge!
So gather your paints, pick your pattern, and enjoy the process. As the Buffalo Gals say:
“We hope you—and every passerby—enjoy your barn quilt!”
